Who Can Join
The Kootenay Robusters welcome all women; it is not necessary to have had a diagnosis of breast cancer. If you see photos of our team, you will see that we are of all ages, shapes and sizes. Come out to paddle as our guest for six practices or for two weeks, whichever comes first. By then we hope that you will love the sport, the exercise and will enjoy the camaraderie that this team has to offer.
Paddles and personal floatation devices are provided. All we ask is that you support our efforts to fulfill our Mission and Value Statements and serve on at least one committee. Our annual paddling fee at present is $120.
Please note: If you applied online, you do not need to fill out the PDFs!
Beyond Paddling
What we do to support the community.
Members of the Kootenay Robusters hail from Castlegar, Trail, Rossland, Christina Lake and Grand Forks and we support community initiatives in all these towns. Because of our focus on breast cancer awareness, hope and prevention, we make sure to take part in any local initiatives related to these goals. Some examples of recent events are: Relay for Life, Slopes for Hopes, Daffodil Dash, Light Up the Hospital, information booths for businesses like Safeway, Mark’s Work Wearhouse, Shoppers Drug Mart and the regional hospital’s Golf Classic Dinner.
For many years, we have shared funds from our annual calendar sales to help meet the needs of oncology departments in area hospitals. And Castlegar members got their hands dirty planting daffodils in the community Garden of Hope, and raised awareness with a different crowd by dropping the puck at Castlegar Rebels hockey games during Breast Cancer month.
Robusters also think it is important to support other activities that are important to our communities so we have helped out in a variety of ways. When floods arrived in 2018, we put down our paddles, picked up shovels and filled sandbags to help out Grand Forks and Christina Lake. On their annual garbage pickup days we wear our uniforms and spend a morning making Christina Lake roadsides cleaner. We also take part in Homecoming Day at the lake, offering rides in the dragon boat to anyone interested. And our parade dragon boat makes an appearance in at least one of our communities every year during summer celebrations.
